With a grant from the MWCOG Transportation Planning Board Transportation/ Land Use Connections Program, MCDOT developed station prototypes to support current planning efforts for the FLASH corridors in Montgomery County.

To guide the development of the Prototype Design, MCDOT established the following design goals:

  1. Easy to Find and Use
  2. Accessible
  3. Safe and Comfortable
  4. Adaptable and Context Sensitive
  5. Maintainable
  6. A Good Life-Cycle Investment

The FLASH Station Prototype Design:

  • Is adaptable for right-side curb drop off, and center median stops.
  • Is comprised of interchangeable components to respond to potential ranges of ridership on each corridor, and during peak/non peak hours.
  • Is flexible enough to apply to all FLASH corridors, with adjustable design components addressing existing land uses, ridership projections, BRT bus fleet, ADA accessibility, vehicle capacity, wayfinding, and branding.
  • Includes station amenities such as: canopy/wind screen weather protection, seating, lighting, fare payment, dynamic and static information displays, landscaping/hardscaping, and bike accommodations.
  • Identifies opportunities for green infrastructure and sustainability strategies.
  • Identifies opportunities for the incorporation of public art.
  • Is sensitive to cost, schedule and production.
  • May be transferable to other jurisdictions/partners of Montgomery County.
